That’s life for you. Stuff happens. We’ve all experienced times in our lives where something unexpected happens that throws us off our planned course. Sometimes, it’s an immediately pleasant experience. Other times, it grips us to our core–challenging us to look at our life in a completely different way. The gift of this life shift may not be known to us until further down the road. However these experiences show up, they can inspire us to live deeper and more meaningful lives.
You can read about 365 inspiring, life-changing stories in the newly released book, “365 Life Shifts: Pivotal Moments That Changed Everything”.
250 beautiful souls from all around the world, (including me!) share personal shifts with the hopes that they will inspire others to embrace their own life shifts. All of the stories are intended to remind you of just how magical and far reaching a life shift can truly be. Below I’m sharing my submission on page 360:
It was November of 1998 when I finally received my ticket to freedom, but it came with a cost. Several months earlier, I’d returned to an office job I didn’t like after a maternity leave with my first child. The job was increasingly toxic for me, and it was more difficult to show up every day. No one knew yet – I’d just found out I was pregnant with my second child. I had to stick it out a few more months! My much-needed shift would arrive even sooner.
During this time, the climate was changing in many American companies – they were downsizing and restructuring expectations of their employees. I’d worked at this large company for 19 years and wanted to complete 20 years of service, as my retirement benefits would take a nice bump up – justifying the need to hang on a little longer – but it was such a struggle.
On this November day in 1998, with no forewarning, several other employees and I were called into a meeting and terminated on the spot. Just like that – it was all over. We’d receive a package, gather up our belongings, turn in our badges, and walk out the door. As I signed the half-inch–thick pile of legalese paperwork, I tried not to think about how close I was to that bump in my benefits. The truth – it felt shady. Also, the truth – I was free.
I focused on that truth. I never had to go back again! I was free from this job obligation and many attachments of what I “should” do. We’d manage with one income, and I could stay home and really enjoy my new career – being a mom to my beautiful babies.
This life shift was a blessing in disguise. I’d never again stay in a job that wasn’t good for me. My time has now become too valuable to me. I honor who I am now, filling my soaring soul with happiness and purpose. While I may have paid a price, the ticket to my freedom was priceless.
